"Breathtakingly Brave" A Review of Breaking Ground by Mary Jane White

Breaking Ground Book Review

Marie, your story certainly resonated with me as one coming up in the same profession and in the same era of social confusion for young women. The story of Carmel's travels to so many US cities in pursuit of Gary, mostly on buses and trains brought to mind how porous and unobjectionable the Northern border is--compared to the Southern. Carmel struck me as a breathtakingly brave and nearly-foolish character who was lucky to meet with kindness whenever she found herself in a tight corner. I thought the reveal (no spoiler for the rest of you) about Deb and Gary toward the end cast a new light back over all Carmel's troubles earlier--and dislodged the whole story from the clear-eyed way Carmel had lived it into something much murkier."
