I am 80 years old.
I had an abortion - days before registering for law school– an illegal abortion - yes - on a kitchen table.
I told no one. I have no regrets. I practiced law, I married, I had two children, I became a judge.
Had the government known about the illegal abortion, I would never have been appointed to judicial office.
Women have the right to own our bodies. We must act together to ensure we keep that right.
The basic rights that women have today – the right to vote, the right to hold public office, the right to an education, the right to be a doctor, the right to be a lawyer, the right to own property, the right to obtain credit, the right to have a bank account - were not acquired because male legislators or judges decided it was fair and timely.
These right were acquired by the actions of women: women who protested, women who were arrested, women who were force-fed in prison, women who sued, whether singly or in concert with other women.
Why am I repeating the same words I said 50 years ago?
Own your ovaries. Get your ovaries marching.
